Air pollution awareness

Community awareness activities on the causes and harms of air pollution.

Air pollution is among the most immediate environmental health risks people face in Bangladesh. Dust from roads and construction, smoke from brick kilns, exhaust from ageing vehicles, and the open burning of household waste and polythene all settle into the air families breathe every day. Through this programme we work to make these causes visible and understandable, so that communities can recognise the sources around them and act on what is within their reach.

We run awareness sessions in schools, colleges, markets and neighbourhood gatherings, explaining in plain language how polluted air affects breathing, why it carries greater risk for children, older people and those who work outdoors, and how the harm accumulates quietly over time. We also discuss practical responses: not burning waste or polythene in the open, keeping vehicles maintained so they do not release black smoke, supporting cleaner alternatives to burnt-clay bricks, controlling dust around homes and worksites, and protecting the trees that help clean the air.

Air does not stop at a boundary wall, so no household can solve this alone. We therefore treat clean air as a shared responsibility, encouraging neighbours, traders, drivers, teachers and local groups to agree on small changes that can be sustained rather than one-off gestures.

Students, teachers, volunteers, community organisations and anyone who wants cleaner air where they live can take part, by hosting a session, helping to organise one in their institution or locality, or carrying the message into their own household and workplace.
