Arsenic-safe water testing

Water testing activities to address arsenic and salinity risks.

We run water testing for arsenic and salinity so that families across Bangladesh know whether the water they drink every day is safe. Most people in the country depend on groundwater drawn from tube wells, and in many areas that water carries arsenic. Along the coast, salinity turns water brackish and unfit for drinking and cooking. Neither problem changes how water looks, smells or tastes, so testing is the only reliable way to tell a safe source from an unsafe one.

Our teams test on site at tube wells, household connections and shared community water points. We record the result for each source separately and mark the source clearly, so that everyone who draws water from it can see the finding at a glance. We then explain in plain language what the reading means for drinking, for cooking, and for children and pregnant women in the household.

When a source is found unsafe, we do not stop at handing over a result. We sit with the family or the community to decide what comes next: using a nearby source that has tested safe, treating water before use, harvesting rainwater where the setting allows, or approaching the responsible authorities for a safer supply. Arsenic harms the body slowly and shows itself as illness long after exposure begins, which is why knowing early matters so much.

Anyone can take part. Households, schools, madrasas, mosques, clinics and local committees can ask us to test their water sources, and volunteers are welcome to join the testing work and the awareness sessions that go with it.
