Clean roads, markets, canals and rivers

Community clean-up activities focused on removing polythene from public spaces and waterways.

We run community clean-up drives that clear polythene and plastic waste from the places people use every day: neighbourhood roads, market areas, drains, canals and riverbanks. The work is deliberately visible. We gather at an agreed spot, clear what has collected there, and leave behind a change residents can see for themselves.

Each drive begins before the collecting does. We walk the area with the people who live and trade there, look at where waste is entering the drain or the water, and agree what can realistically be kept clean afterwards. During the drive we separate what is collected instead of piling it together, so that recyclable plastic is not simply dumped or burned. Where a spot fills up again, we return and talk with shopkeepers and households about where their polythene is going.

This matters because polythene does not break down. It settles in drains and canals and blocks them, so ordinary monsoon rain becomes standing water in streets and courtyards. What washes further out chokes the channels that should carry water away, and reaches rivers already carrying more waste than they can absorb. Burning it only shifts the pollution into the air people breathe.

Anyone can take part. Students and teachers, youth and volunteer groups, market committees, community associations, and families who simply want their own lane cleared are welcome to join a drive or ask for one in their area. No experience is needed. If you would like to organise or support a clean-up where you live, please contact us.
