Educational materials support

Distribute educational materials in densely populated communities.

We run an educational materials support programme for children living in densely populated communities across Bangladesh. In neighbourhoods where families spend most of what they earn on rent, food and medical costs, the price of exercise books, pens and a school bag is often what decides whether a child stays in class. We provide these basic materials directly to students, so that learning does not stop for want of something small.

The work is organised locally. Our volunteers speak with schools, teachers and community members to identify children who are falling behind or are at risk of leaving school, and distributions are held at the school or at a community centre nearby. Materials are handed to the student in the presence of a parent or teacher wherever possible, and we stay in touch with teachers afterwards so that support can continue for those who need it again.

We also treat these distributions as a place to begin environmental learning. Children in crowded areas grow up with polluted canals and rivers, smoke from brick kilns and traffic, and water that is not always safe to drink. Alongside exercise books and stationery we share simple reading material on waste, clean water and tree planting, so that the habits we ask of adults are familiar to children early.

Schools, teachers, community groups and volunteers can take part, and individuals or institutions who wish to contribute materials are welcome to contact us.
