Roadside tree plantation

Plan and support tree plantation projects along public roads.

We plan and support tree plantation along public roads across Bangladesh. Roadside land is some of the most available and most overlooked planting space in the country, and a continuous line of trees changes an entire stretch of road for the people who walk it and live beside it. Our role is to organise that work and to make sure each sapling has someone responsible for it once it is in the ground.

In practice a plantation begins with the people who live along the road. We speak with residents, shopkeepers, schools and the authority responsible for the land, agree on stretches where planting will not obstruct traffic, drainage or overhead lines, and select hardy native species that tolerate dust, heat and poor, infertile soil. We plant when seasonal rains give young trees the best chance to establish, fence or guard them where cattle graze, and continue with watering through the dry season, replacement of failed saplings and pruning. We treat survival, not the number planted, as the measure of success.

This work matters because roads in Bangladesh carry growing traffic, exhaust and dust through settlements that are becoming denser and hotter. Trees along a roadside give shade to pedestrians, hold soil and embankments in place during heavy rain, soften noise, filter some of what vehicles put into the air, and become shelter for birds and other wildlife.

Anyone can take part. Students and teachers, volunteers, youth and community groups, and households and businesses beside a road are all welcome, whether on a planting day or by caring for a few trees nearby long afterwards. Get in touch to join a planting effort near you.
